Miley Cyrus is a Whore…Oh, and We’re Going to War With Syria

If you’ve been paying attention to the internet this week you would know that apparently Ben Affleck is going to be playing Batman in the new “Man of Steel” sequel, everyone’s kids are going back to school, Miley Cyrus is a giant slut, aaaaaand apparently we’re preparing military strikes against Syria for as early as Thursday.  Which means much like Ben Affleck is probably thankful that Miley Cyrus made an ass out of her self at the VMAs…

Ben Thanks Miley Cyrus
…Miley can probably be thankful that on Monday Secretary of State John Kerry announced that “there must be accountability” for what he termed a “moral obscenity.” You see, John’s not talking about Miley’s performance at the VMAs when he talks about moral obscenity, although if he called for military action as a result of what happened Sunday night I might be slightly more sympathetic to his cause. He’s actually calling for a military reaction to “undeniable” evidence that Syria has used chemical weapons against its own people.

I’m starting to feel like I’m taking crazy pills here, people.  I remember this happening almost identically some 10-20 years ago. Brutal Middle East dictator has gotten his hands on some chemical weapons, uses them on his own people, and the United States rushes to intervene despite other countries being torn on how to proceed.

For those that need a quick run down of what is going on in Syria, Julie Borowski did a video on the topic recently. Understandably, the topic is a confusing one, mainly because there are so many different factions and alliances in the country. She does her best to break it down.

The question Julie asks in that video is, “Will it be worth it?”. Is it worth it to the citizens of the United States to get involved in a civil war that does not involve our country, or our interests? I don’t really think so.

Also, does the President legally have the power to do this without going to Congress? Back in 2008 the Presidential candidates were asked this question in regards to Iran, and at the time both Barack Obama and Joe Biden answered the question “No”.

Official photographic portrait of US President...

The President does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation.

As Commander-in-Chief, the President does have a duty to protect and defend the United States. In instances of self-defense, the President would be within his constitutional authority to act before advising Congress or seeking its consent. History has shown us time and again, however, that military action is most successful when it is authorized and supported by the Legislative branch. It is always preferable to have the informed consent of Congress prior to any military action.

As for the specific question about bombing suspected nuclear sites, I recently introduced S.J. Res. 23, which states in part that “any offensive military action taken by the United States against Iran must be explicitly authorized by Congress.” The recent NIE tells us that Iran in 2003 halted its effort to design a nuclear weapon. While this does not mean that Iran is no longer a threat to the United States or its allies, it does give us time to conduct aggressive and principled personal diplomacy aimed at preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons. – Barack Obama

Champion of Libertarians everywhere, and general voice of reason and sanity in the House of Representatives, Justin Amash has begun to weigh in on the legality of the President’s actions should he decide to tactically bomb Syria.

But President Obama going against his word, taking actions in a less than legal manner, and working against the wishes of the American people seem to be the norm nowadays. It looks like we’re watching the same story unfold again, just this time with a social liberal pulling the strings, rather than a social conservative.

Interesting post, you make a few intreaguing points. Baring what you’ve written in mind, you may be interested in something I wrote a while ago: http://rileyfrost.wordpress.com/2013/08/26/what-are-the-concequences-of-military-intervention-in-syria/

I can’t stand looking at or listening to Julie Borowski. Her over-excited, upturned eyes, her overwhelming way of speaking, she should be out of breath. One moment I’m thinking of the overly-attached girlfriend. Another moment I’m thinking of Tuco from Breaking Bad.

    Good article as always Pete.

Re: Julie: I saw a YouTube video of her speaking at a conference- TOTALLY different person. Much calmer. Definitely some kind of stylistic exaggeration / zippy editing going on with her videos.

Re: Syria: I am completely disgusted with this administration. They are continuing Bush’s legacy, but somehow get away with it in the media. At least Bush was constantly hated and criticized in the media for his militarism. I don’t see the same thing for Barry. It’s complete shit. We shouldn’t be involved in this conflict. Hindsight tells us that whenever we muck around in the middle east, it’s a mess and helps nothing.
